Opalescence: a brighter smile, with realistic expectations
Whitening toothpaste and bleaching treatments are not the same thing. Here is where Opalescence Cool Mint toothpaste fits—and when to speak to your dentist instead.
A brighter smile does not always call for a complicated routine. Sometimes the question is simply whether a toothpaste can help with surface staining. But “whitening” covers very different products, and the Opalescence name appears on both everyday toothpaste and peroxide-based treatments.

Start with the distinction
Surface-stain removal is not bleaching
Opalescence describes its Original whitening toothpaste as using silica to remove surface stains, with sodium fluoride for cavity protection. The manufacturer states that this formula does not contain peroxide. Removing staining can improve the appearance of teeth, but that is different from bleaching their underlying colour.
Do not treat a manufacturer’s shade-change claim as a guaranteed personal result. The cause of discolouration, your starting point and your routine all matter. A toothpaste purchase should not replace assessment of an unexplained change in tooth colour.

Would it suit your routine?
It is an option to consider if you want a mint-flavoured toothpaste aimed at surface stains. It is a less suitable purchase if you expect dramatic bleaching results from brushing alone, or if it would replace a toothpaste specifically recommended for your dental needs.
