Teeth-whitening products: effective options and what to avoid
Whitening toothpaste can help with surface stain. Changing the underlying tooth colour is a different process—and in Ireland it belongs in a dentist-led conversation.

What can toothpaste realistically do?
Whitening toothpastes mainly remove or reduce external stain from sources such as tea, coffee and tobacco. They may improve brightness, but they do not reproduce the deeper colour change expected from professionally managed peroxide bleaching. More abrasive scrubbing is not a shortcut and can be particularly unhelpful where recession or erosion is present.
When peroxide enters the picture
EU rules distinguish ordinary oral products containing no more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide from whitening products releasing more than 0.1% and up to 6%. The latter are restricted to dental practitioners, with the first use by a dentist or under direct supervision, and are not for people under 18. That is why an online product with dramatic concentration claims should prompt caution rather than excitement.
What I would avoid
- Unverified high-strength gels or imported kits with unclear peroxide concentration.
- Acidic DIY methods involving lemon, vinegar or other kitchen ingredients.
- Charcoal used aggressively in the belief that abrasion equals safe whitening.
- One-size trays that leak gel onto gums or do not fit properly.
- Continuing through significant sensitivity, gum burning or irritation.
- Whitening before establishing why one tooth differs markedly from the others.
A sensible sequence
- Have active disease and unexplained colour changes assessed.
- Improve plaque control and arrange professional stain removal when appropriate.
- Use a fluoride toothpaste consistently.
- If you still want a change in intrinsic shade, discuss dentist-supervised whitening.
- Use a stain-removal toothpaste for maintenance only if it remains comfortable.
