What stays the same?
Both belong to Philips’ current next-generation Sonicare family and provide timed pacing and pressure feedback. Neither makes brushing technique irrelevant. You still need to place the bristles carefully, use light contact, brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between the teeth.
What does the 7100 add?
The meaningful upgrade is control: four modes combined with three intensity levels. That may help someone who wants a gentler setting, a gum-focused routine or more personal adjustment. Its app provides guidance, while the charging travel case is useful for frequent travellers. The checked navy bundle also includes two G3 Premium Gum Care heads rather than one W2 head.
None of those additions guarantees a better outcome. If you will leave the brush on one mode, never open the app and rarely travel, you are paying for unused capability.
Why the 5500 remains compelling
Clean and White are understandable, the pressure alert addresses a common mistake, and the included case covers ordinary travel. I use Sonicare myself and appreciate the slim head and restrained routine. For most buyers, the 5500 reaches the point where additional spending becomes preference rather than necessity.
Which should you buy?
- Choose 5500 if you value simplicity, dislike apps and want a polished daily brush.
- Choose 7100 if intensity adjustment, app coaching, gum-focused heads or a charging case will change how you use it.
- Choose neither yet if you have unexplained sensitivity or pain; establish the cause before buying around it.
